Trenholm State Participates in 2023 National HBCU Week:
Fostering Educational Partnerships
and Celebrating Excellence

As one of twelve public historically black community colleges across the nation, Trenholm State seized the opportunity to actively participate in the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Annual National HBCU Week, which unfolded from September 24th to 28th in Arlington, VA.

This comprehensive week-long event brought together the college's administration and students in a vibrant exchange of ideas and learning experiences. Attendees were enriched through a series of professional development workshops and were privileged to be inspired by dynamic keynote addresses delivered by esteemed figures, including the U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. Miguel Cardon, and the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

In a spirit of collaboration and relationship-building, Trenholm State's President, Dr. Kemba Chambers, and Drake State's President, Dr. Patricia Sims, assumed prominent roles as panelists alongside Dr. Quin Jernigan from Amazon Web Services. Together, they explored the pivotal theme of "Nurturing College, Industry, and Corporate Partnerships for Sustained Organizational Growth." This thought-provoking discussion underscored the profound significance of fostering partnerships with industry and corporate entities in the realm of education. Several other Alabama HBCC Presidents presented during the conference to include Dr. Cynthia Anthony, Lawson State, and Olivier Charles, Bishop State. The Presidents of Alabama's HBCCs also eloquently delineated the myriad opportunities and programs that have been meticulously crafted for the benefit of their students.

Beyond the extensive workshop sessions, our HBCU Scholars relished the chance to engage with over 50 business and industry employers during the HBCU Week Career and Recruitment fair. Students also showcased their skills and potential while also participating in the stimulating HBCU Hackathon, which NASA proudly sponsored. Furthermore, our scholars embarked on an inspiring visit to the U.S. Capitol and were accorded special recognition during the Excellence in Innovation and Collaboration Awards Presentation Dinner.

Dr. Kemba Chambers, President of Trenholm State Community College, remarked, "The Annual National HBCU Week Conference this year marked a significant milestone for Trenholm State. For the very first time, two of our students were honored as HBCU Scholars." Dr. Chambers went on to say, "This recognition allowed our students to receive national acclaim. Moreover, this year's conference provided numerous opportunities for our Historical Black Community Colleges (HBCCs) to actively participate by presenting in diverse sessions and gaining recognition within the broader HBCU community."
