Alabama Student Assistance Grant (ASAP) Policy

Student Orientation, Admission & Registration

The Alabama Student Assistance Grant Program (ASAP) is a need-based, state/federal grant ranging from $300 to $5,000 per academic year. Eligible students are undergraduate students who are Alabama residents attending eligible Alabama institutions who have a Federal Pell Grant EFC Index of Zero.

In order to be apply for ASAP funds, students must completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit the application to the federal processor. The FAFSA should be filed beginning October 1, each year and is available at: . Students must enter the Trenholm State Federal School Code (005734) on their FAFSA in the school selection section in order for the Trenholm financial aid office to receive a processed report.

Award Amounts

The Alabama Student Assistance Program guidelines, the minimum award amount is $300 and the maximum award amount is $5,000. ASAP awards at Trenholm State usually range from $300 to $2500.

However, students with an EFC of zero enrolled in a certificate programs are subject to the clock-to-credit hour conversion, ASAP may be awarded for increased amounts since the FPell Grant awards for these students are reduced significantly during the conversion process.

According to the amount of ASAP funds awarded to the College and in an effort to extend the availability of ASAP funds to as many needy students as possible, ASAP awards may often be offered either in uneven amounts or may have to be awarded one semester at a time based on the recipient’s demonstrated need. Keeping in mind that a student’s total aid may not exceed the student’s financial need (Cost of Attendance – EFC = Need).

Students who are Alabama residents may receive the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and the Alabama Student Assistance Grant (ASAP) in the same semester/term. The financial aid office will seek to make ASAP funds reasonably available throughout the award year if needed.

When awarded, ASAP awards are transmitted electronically in order to post to the students’ accounts on the ALLIANTDATA System. Any ASAP credit balances due students will be disbursed to them by check by the Business Office.

Students are notified as to their awarded ASAP amounts through their My Trenholm Portal, by selecting the Shopping Sheet tab which allows them to view all financial aid awarded to them and/or by printed award notifications that are emailed to them.
