The Practical Nursing program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and proficiencies to provide safe and effective bedside nursing care within the scope of practice of licensed practical nurses. Students are instructed in the provision of nursing care for clients through the lifespan. Clinical experiences are provided at area hospitals and healthcare agencies in adult health, maternal health, child health, orthopedics, geriatrics, psychiatric and other areas of nursing practice.
Practical Nursing is open to men and women; few careers match the versatility, satisfaction, and longevity afforded by a nursing career. Students who have satisfactorily completed the program may apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN). The Practical Nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing. The program has a competitive admissions process.

Nursing Mission Statement
The mission of the nursing programs of the Alabama Community College System is to prepare graduates to practice safe, competent, patient-centered care in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing health care system. We seek to provide full and equal access to opportunities for educational success to meet the community needs.
We believe that nursing is a dynamic profession, blending science with the use of evidence based practice and clinical reasoning and the art of caring and compassion to provide quality, patient-centered cared.
We believe learning is an interactive process in which faculty and students share responsibility to meet program outcomes. We believe in using educational methods that are current and supportive of students in the teaching and learning environment, with the presentation of information from simple to complex.
Nursing is guided by standards of practice and standards of professional performance. Standards reflect the values and priorities of the nursing profession. Therefore, we have integrated competencies from the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) and National League for Nursing (NLN) into our philosophy as part of our core values.
NLN competencies for nursing are central to the conceptual framework. The related QSEN competencies for graduate nurses define the knowledge, skills and attitudes that the graduate nurse should possess to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. PROGRAM OUTCOMES (click title expand)
- Performance on Licensure Exam
The most recent annual licensure examination pass rate will be at least 80% for all first-time test-takers during the same 12-month period.
- Program Completion
Each program will determine program completion rate based on the program demographics. Program completion is defined as the percentage of students admitted who graduate in no more than 150% of the time of the stated program length beginning with the first required nursing course as delineated below:
AAS in Nursing – seven semesters (eight semesters for part-time tract)
AAS in Mobility LPN/Paramedic with NUR 209 – four semesters
AAS in Mobility LPN/Paramedic without NUR 209 – three semesters
PN Certificate – four semesters
- Job Placement
Each program will determine the job placement rate based on the program's demographics. Job Placement is defined as the Percentage of graduates employed in a position for which a nursing program prepared them.
- Graduate and Employer Surveys
Graduate and employer surveys are not mandated. Programs may continue to use the surveys as additional tools for assessing and evaluating program outcomes.

- To develop graduates who will successfully meet the entry level expectations of diverse employers in the field of practical nursing.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE (click title expand)
- The Nursing Program admits a class each Fall semester.
- Complete and submit a college application to Trenholm State Community College, if not currently enrolled (can be submitted online).
- Official transcripts from all colleges attended must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office.
- Student must be in good standing with the college.
- A completed Trenholm State nursing application must be submitted to the Director of Nursing, P.O. Box 10048, Montgomery, AL 36108. No applications will be accepted after the deadline for submission.
- Official results of the ACT (minimum of 20 composite score national or residual is required) must be submitted to the Registrar’s office with a copy attached to the nursing program application. The writing component of the ACT is not required for consideration of admission to the nursing program.
- Take the ACCUPLACER placement examination as indicated (exceptions may apply).
- Provide one form of state identification.
- A minimum 2.5 GPA is required on nursing academic core classes inclusive of: English Composition I (ENG101), Intermediate College Algebra (or higher level math - Pre-Cal, Finite Math, or Statistics) (MTH100), Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO201) & II (BIO202), Microbiology (BIO220), Human Growth & Development (PSY210), Speech (SPH106), and a Humanities elective (Art or Music Appreciation, Philosophy, Theater, Religion, or a foreign language).
- A minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA is required for high school students without prior college work. A GED is also considered as meeting minimum requirements.
- Eligibility is required for English Composition 101, Math 100 (Intermediate College Algebra) and BIO 201.
- Good standing with the College including a minimum overall, cumulative GPA of 2.50.
- Must meet the Essential Functions for nursing. Once accepted to the nursing program the essential functions document must have the signature and date of view of medical personnel (e.g.MD, DO, NP). The requirements for meeting essential functions for the nursing program can be requested periodically during the nursing program as indicated. If a nursing student cannot meet the essential functions requirements, the student may be withdrawn from the nursing program.
Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the nursing program.

The Practical Nursing Program consists of three (3) sequential semesters. Faculty advise students to complete all core general education courses prior to entering the PN program The curriculum outline below you will notice that the core general education courses are into included.

The curriculum is designed to provide students with current nursing education and practice emphasizing evidenced-based practice utilizing the standards from Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) and the National League of Nursing (NLN). At the completion of the program, the graduate will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN).
